The Islamic Republic of Iran, located between the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf in southwestern Asia, has an area of 636,296 sq. mi. (1,648,000 sq. km.) and a population of 80.7 million. Capital: Tehran. Predominantly an agricultural state, Iran also has oil export. Crude oil, carpets and agricultural products are exported. The terms "Iran" as the designation for the civilization, and "Iranian" as the name for the inhabitants living the large plateau located between the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf have been in continual use for more than twenty-five hundred years. Persia or Iran came from the oldest civilizations in mid-east called Mesopotamia, and one of the oldest of world heritage sites is the city of Susa in south west of Iran. Number of many flourishing civilizations of antiquity came out from Persian land such as Sumeria, Assyria, Persia, Parthia, and Sassanian.
