The Syrian Arab Republic, located in the Near East at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea, has an area of 71,498 sq. mi. (185,180 sq. km.) and a population of *12 million. Capital: Greater Damascus. Agriculture and animal breeding are the chief industries. Cotton, crude oil and livestock are exported.

The Syrian pound or Syrian lira is the currency of Syria and is issued by the Central Bank of Syria. The pound is subdivided into 100 qirsh, although coins in qirsh are no longer issued.
